Is the killer the reclusive financier? The smooth-tongued salesman? The rough-hewn Italian sheepherder? The grieving widow? The widow’s gullible boyfriend? The financier’s too-clever daughter leads Perry Mason on a wild goose chase, and the lies pile up. Mason has to sort through the clues and use courtroom ingenuity to snare the culprit.

“Double or Quits” by Erle Stanley Gardner (writing as A. A. Fair): Dr. Devarest wants detectives Donald Lam and Bertha Cool to recover the jewels that were stolen from the safe in his den. It soon appears he’s more worried about something else that was stolen, but he won’t say what. Later that same night, Donald finds Devarest dead in his own garage. Was it an accident, or was it murder?
